NBA Calls for Police Action Against Lawyer Harassment

The Akure branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Ondo State Police Command to address the alleged harassment and intimidation of lawyers while they represent clients at police stations. During a courtesy visit to the state Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, NBA Chairman Oju Kekemeke emphasized the importance of collaboration between lawyers and police officers to maintain a stable society.

He proposed regular coordination meetings to discuss lawful arrests, protection of suspects’ rights, and compliance with human rights. Kekemeke reported that some lawyers have faced harassment and intimidation at police stations and urged the police to engage with the NBA to resolve any issues involving lawyers.

He criticized the command's policy requiring lawyers to surrender their mobile phones before entering police stations, stating that phones contain confidential client information. Ohagwu responded positively to the NBA's concerns, indicating a willingness to improve the administration of justice.
