TACKLING MODERN-DAY SLAVERY

The Nigerian government, led by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) chairperson Abike, is working to address modern-day slavery and empower its citizens. Despite the belief that slavery was abolished, over 7,000 Nigerian immigrants stranded in Libya tell a different story.

Modern slavery involves exploitation, coercion, and abuse, with Nigeria being among the most vulnerable countries in Africa. The Global Slavery Index estimates that there are millions living in modern slavery in Nigeria, with many forced into labor, marriage, or other exploitative situations.

The country is identified as a source, transit, and destination for human trafficking, with poverty and economic crises being major factors. The government is urged to take bold action, involving both public and private sectors, to combat and eliminate modern slavery, restore dignity, and empower the Nigerian populace.
