Tambuwal’s Arrest, Intimidation Tactic Against Opposition – HURIWA

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has accused the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of using selective arrests and investigations as intimidation tactics against the opposition ahead of the 2027 general election. HURIWA criticized the EFCC for interrogating and detaining former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal over alleged fraudulent cash withdrawals amounting to N189 billion, calling it a smokescreen to intimidate the opposition movement.

The National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, described the EFCC's actions as a calculated pattern of harassment against prominent figures in the opposition, including those in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. HURIWA highlighted the double standards in the EFCC's approach, noting that corruption cases involving opposition politicians are aggressively pursued while those involving ruling party members mysteriously disappear.

The group warned that the EFCC's actions erode public confidence and weaken Nigeria's fight against corruption, turning the agency into a partisan.
