Tiv Stakeholders Reject Peace Claims in Taraba Crisis

Tiv stakeholders in Taraba State have publicly dismissed recent claims of progress towards peace in the ongoing conflict with the Jukun community. In a statement released on Friday, they expressed that the assertion of improved conditions is misleading and does not reflect the reality on the ground.

The group highlighted that despite ongoing meetings and public statements, there is little evidence of concrete actions or sustained commitment from the Taraba State government. They criticized the reliance on external media efforts rather than addressing the crisis internally.

The stakeholders raised concerns about the role of security forces, particularly the military, in restricting the return of displaced Tiv persons to their ancestral homes. They emphasized that peace cannot be enforced through restrictions and called for a genuine reconciliation process that ensures the safe and unconditional return of displaced individuals, alongside guarantees of protection and justice.

The statement also warned that historical efforts fade once political pressure eases, leaving communities vulnerable and deepening mistrust.
