Taraba Women Graduate from Maternal Health Program

In Taraba State, twenty women have successfully graduated from a maternal health intervention program designed to combat rising maternal deaths among adolescents. This initiative, known as the "Big Sister" model, is a partnership between the federal government and West Central Africa Health Option Ltd, targeting vulnerable communities across two local government areas.

The program involved four days of intensive training in sexual and reproductive health education, equipping participants to mentor younger girls and promote safe health practices. Dr.

Tukura Nuhu, the Executive Secretary of the Taraba State Primary Health Care Development Agency, emphasized the importance of these graduates as role models in their communities. Mr.

Ibrahim Shey, a coordinator for the NGO, highlighted the critical need for accurate sexual and reproductive health education to address high maternal mortality rates in the state. The program aims to create a supportive environment for young girls to discuss health concerns openly.

The pilot phase has been implemented in eight states, including Benu, Enugu, and Akwa Ibom.
