FIRS Appeals ₦5.5 Billion Judgment to Supreme Court

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) is currently involved in a legal dispute with the Bayelsa State Revenue Service regarding a Federal High Court ruling that ordered the FIRS to pay ₦5.5 billion to the Bayelsa State Revenue Service. The payment is based on allegations that the Bayelsa State Revenue Service wrongfully collected certain withheld funds.

The Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, is leading the legal team representing the federal government in this case. The Supreme Court has reportedly scheduled a judgment for July 27, 2026, concerning the appeal filed by the FIRS against the Federal High Court's decision.

This case is part of broader tax disputes involving various companies and state governments in Nigeria, reflecting ongoing challenges in the country's tax ecosystem.
