Tax Reform Committee Denies Errors in New Tax Laws

The Presidential Fiscal Policy Tax Reform Committee has refuted claims that Taiwo Oyedele, the Minister of State for Finance, admitted to errors in Nigeria's new tax laws, describing the reports as misleading. The committee clarified that Oyedele's comments were misrepresented, asserting that there were no admissions of fault regarding the tax laws.

They emphasized that the legislative process had concluded and warned against interpretations that could confuse the public and undermine the reform's intent. Oyedele, who chairs the committee, spoke at the 2026 annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, outlining the rationale behind the tax reforms aimed at correcting structural inefficiencies in Nigeria's tax system.

The committee noted significant improvements, including a rise in tax registrations and relief measures for low-income earners. The reforms are part of a broader strategy initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who signed four major tax reform laws in June 2025 to enhance revenue mobilization and reduce reliance on oil earnings.
