Nigeria's TCN Boosts Electricity Capacity to 8,700MW

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that its electricity transmission system can now handle up to 8,700 megawatts (MW) of power. Engr. Oluwagbenga Ajiboye, Executive Director of the Transmission Service Provider at TCN, made this disclosure during a workshop in Keffi.

Despite this capacity, many Nigerians still face unreliable electricity, prompting TCN to shift focus to the distribution companies (DisCos). Ajiboye stated that while TCN has strengthened its infrastructure, DisCos must be ready to receive and distribute the electricity.

He challenged the notion that transmission capacity is the sole bottleneck, arguing that commercial considerations may prevent DisCos from accepting more electricity. TCN's infrastructure has not yet been physically tested at the 8,700MW capacity, but simulations indicate it can accommodate this volume.

Ajiboye also mentioned that TCN has added about 89 power transformers to its network to enhance the national grid's strength.
