TCN Expands Power Grid with $1.4bn Funding Boost

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully expanded its transmission capacity through more than $1.4 billion in multilateral and development financing, resulting in an increase of over 8,500 megavolt-amperes (MVA) of transformer capacity. TCN currently has an electricity wheeling capacity of 8,700 megawatts (MW) and achieved a peak transmission of 5,801.84 MW on March 4, 2025.

The company commissioned 89 new transformers nationwide, with significant projects including a 300MVA transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja, increasing its capacity to 750MVA. Additional transformers were commissioned in Abakaliki and Damaturu, enhancing local supply capabilities.

TCN also reported a maximum daily energy transmission of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours (MWh). Furthermore, the federal government has deployed 668,000 electricity meters, covering 60% of the 1.033 million meters under the World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP).

The developments are part of ongoing efforts to improve power delivery and address challenges such as vandalism and ageing assets.
