TCN Defends Solar Streetlight Projects as Constituency Initiatives

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) responded to allegations by Emmanuel Oluwole Uti of FIJ regarding a payment of N1.28 billion for solar streetlight projects, stating these are National Assembly Constituency Projects included in the Federal Government's approved budget. TCN clarified that it did not initiate these projects; they were assigned to TCN as the implementing agency by the National Assembly.

The funds used are Federal Government appropriations, processed through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) in compliance with financial regulations. TCN noted that the procurement process received approvals from relevant agencies, including the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

The projects aim to enhance security and socio-economic activity in vulnerable communities in Jigawa, Kano, and Kogi States. TCN affirmed that executing such projects does not deviate from its primary responsibility of bulk power transmission, as it is legally permitted to undertake projects assigned by the National Assembly.
