Team Nigeria Aims for Medals at Commonwealth Fencing

Team Nigeria is gearing up for the Commonwealth Fencing Federation Championships scheduled to take place in Lagos from August 9 to 14. The squad includes promising fencers Adebodunri Thomas and Alex Chizim Aninyei, who previously showcased their skills at the 2025 African Championships.

At 17, Thomas is Nigeria’s top-ranked female épée fencer and expresses confidence in her ability to compete against elite athletes, aiming to reach the last 16 as she did in the Junior African Championships. Aninyei, 19, shares similar enthusiasm, looking forward to representing Nigeria and aspiring to qualify from the pools and win a medal.

National coach Ibrahim Alogba emphasizes the significance of the championships as an opportunity for Nigeria to demonstrate its progress in fencing, stating that the team is well-prepared and united, with a strong chance of bringing home medals.
