ATCON Celebrates 25 Years of Nigeria's Telecom Growth

The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), led by President Tony Emoekpere, acknowledged the significant contributions of technicians, engineers, and field professionals to the growth of Nigeria's telecommunications industry over the past 25 years. In a note titled "25 Years of Telecoms: Remembering the Heroes Behind Nigeria’s Connectivity," Emoekpere highlighted that the industry's development, particularly since the liberalization of the telecom sector in 2001, has been built on the sacrifices of these workers.

The sector has attracted approximately $75 billion in investment since liberalization, transforming Nigeria's telecommunications landscape from a fixed-line system to a comprehensive digital infrastructure. Emoekpere emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by field personnel, including security risks, as they maintain and extend network connectivity.

He called for continued recognition of their efforts as Nigeria transitions into a new era of telecommunications characterized by advancements in smartphones, broadband, and 5G connectivity.
