Violence Erupts in Durban Amid Anti-Immigration Clash

On September 3, 2026, a violent confrontation erupted in the Umbilo area of Durban between members of the anti-immigration March and March Movement and foreign nationals camping outside the Department of Home Affairs office on Che Guevara Road. Approximately 100 members of March and March arrived for a community "clean-up" campaign, which quickly escalated into violence when protesters allegedly took belongings from foreign nationals.

The altercation involved physical confrontations, with stones and sticks used as weapons. Police, led by KwaZulu-Natal spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, intervened, deploying tear gas and crowd-management measures to restore order.

A foreign national was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer by throwing a stone. The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing, warning that those inciting violence would face prosecution.
