Tension in Rivers as NSCDC Operative and Resident Killed

Tension escalated in Etche Local Government Area, Rivers State, after a National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operative was reportedly shot dead in an incident involving sand dredging activities. The deceased, identified as Bright Umuechem, was killed when a rifle was allegedly discharged accidentally during a clash with local sand tipper drivers.

Following this incident, the NSCDC operative was also shot dead in what appeared to be a retaliatory attack. The NSCDC's special mine marshal unit was deployed from the national headquarters to enforce a ban on sand dredging when the incident occurred.

In response to the violence, Chima Njoku, the council chairman, announced the immediate suspension of sand tipper driver operations in the area to prevent further escalation. The NSCDC is assigned to the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, and the situation has prompted local officials to seek clarification on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
