FG Launches 82 Local Textbooks to Boost Education

On Wednesday, the Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), unveiled 82 newly developed academic textbooks authored by Nigerian scholars. This initiative, presented by Minister of Education Dr.

Tunji Alausa in Abuja, aims to enhance teaching and learning in universities and polytechnics across the nation. The collection includes 72 academic texts and 10 additional titles produced under TETFund’s higher education book development intervention project.

The initiative addresses the shortage of locally authored textbooks and aims to reduce Nigeria's reliance on foreign academic materials, thereby transforming the educational sector. Alausa emphasized the importance of local authorship in strengthening fields critical to national development, such as science and technology.

TETFund's Executive Secretary Arc. Sonni Echono noted that the project had previously faced slow progress, with only 20 textbooks published since 2014.

However, a renewed focus has led to the publication of 82 books so far, with plans for further releases by March 2025.
