UN Hosts Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva

The United Nations convened a global dialogue on artificial intelligence (AI) governance in Geneva, marking a significant moment in international cooperation on technology. Delegates from nearly every corner of the world attended, including António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, who emphasized the need for trust in AI governance.

Prominent participants included Joi Buolamwini, founder of the Algorithm Justice League, and Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft. The event highlighted the urgency of establishing a scientific foundation for AI governance, as the independent scientific panel on AI, co-chaired by Yoshua Bengio and Maria Ressa, warned that AI advancements could outpace existing safeguards.

The dialogue aimed to foster cooperation among nations and explore common approaches to AI governance, rejecting the notion of creating bureaucratic structures. The discussions were framed against a backdrop of geopolitical debates regarding the role of the UN in AI governance versus market-driven innovation, with the aim of ensuring that AI benefits all countries and not just leading tech firms.
