Lagos State Reports Alarming Domestic Violence Statistics
Between September 2021 and July 2026, Lagos State recorded 33,009 cases of domestic and sexual violence, as disclosed by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, during a media event marking the 2026 Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Month. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) reported that domestic violence accounted for 13,515 cases, with additional figures including 1,171 defilement cases, 797 child abuse and physical assault cases, 420 rapes, and 428 sexual harassment incidents.
Notably, 10,613 children were identified as having suffered emotional abuse due to exposure to domestic violence. The annual data showed a rise in reported cases from 1,075 in late 2021 to 7,882 in 2024, with a slight decline to 4,013 by July 2026.
Pedro stated that while the decline in reports is significant, it must be analyzed alongside the investments made in prevention and community engagement, aiming to reduce violence overall.
