The financial implications of winning major football trophies, such as the FIFA World Cup and UEFA Champions League, are under scrutiny. The 2026 FIFA World Cup featured a record total prize pool of $871 million, with Spain, the champions, receiving $51 million.

Argentina, as runners-up, earned $34 million, while England and France received $30 million and $28 million for third and fourth places, respectively. This prize is part of a larger financial model that includes payments based on team progression and preparation funds.

In contrast, UEFA's Champions League for the 2025/26 season is projected to distribute €2.467 billion among participating clubs. Each of the 36 clubs in the league phase will receive a basic share of €18.62 million, with additional performance payments.
