Nigeria's Power Crisis Deepens Amid Protests and Blackouts

Nigeria is experiencing a severe power crisis, with residents in Edo State, led by Governor Mondai Okpebholo, protesting against persistent blackouts and erratic power supply. Similar protests occurred in Nasarawa State, where leader Ibrahim Abdullahi Attama highlighted the critical state of power supply affecting business, education, healthcare, and overall quality of life.

The Nigerian Independent System Operator reported that the national grid is generating only 3,940 megawatts, significantly below the required levels, due to gas shortages and outdated transmission infrastructure. The country has faced multiple grid collapses, with ten incidents reported in early 2024 alone.

President Bola Tinubu's administration has attempted to address these issues through the Presidential Power Initiative and legislative measures to authorize state companies and private investors to operate mini-grid power plants. However, the situation remains dire, with the need for urgent reforms and investment in renewable energy to alleviate the ongoing crisis.
