Alhaji Bamanga Tukur: A Legacy in Nigerian Politics
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur (CON), born on September 15, 1935, in Adamawa State, was a notable elder statesman, businessman, and politician. He gained national prominence in the mid-1970s as the General Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority.
Tukur served as the Governor of the old Gongola State from October 1983 to December 1983. He was an unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1992 for the defunct National Republican Convention and later served as Minister of Industries during General Sani Abacha's administration in the 1990s.
Tukur held various leadership positions, including Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, which he was elected to in March 2002. He was also National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from March 2012 to January 2014.
Tukur passed away on September 12, 2026, at the age of 90.
