‘This Is Unacceptable’ – NCoS CG, Nwakuche Blames Officers Over Repeated Jailbreaks

The Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Haliru Nababa Nwakuche, has expressed strong disapproval of the repeated jailbreaks in custodial centers across the country. Nwakuche blamed the officers for their lackadaisical attitude, which he believes has contributed to the security breaches.

Data from the NCoS website revealed that at least 13 inmates have escaped from correctional facilities between 2019 and 2025, with many of them awaiting trial for serious offenses like terrorism and armed robbery. During the decoration of 30 newly promoted Assistant Corrections in Abuja, Nwakuche warned that officers found negligent in their duties will face sanctions.

He emphasized the need for disciplined and proactive leadership to restore public confidence in the correctional system. Nwakuche also reiterated the NCoS's commitment to the vision outlined in the NCoS Act of 2019, which focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration rather than punitive incarceration.
