YET ANOTHER VIOLENT JAILBREAK

The recent violent jailbreak at the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) Medium Security Custodial Centre in Keffi, Nasarawa State, resulted in the escape of 16 inmates and injuries to five personnel. This incident highlights the dire need for serious decongestion and reform within the Nigerian prison system, as many awaiting trial inmates languish indefinitely in overcrowded and violent facilities.

The Keffi jailbreak is just one in a series of similar incidents across the country, including at the Koton Karfe Custodial Centre in Kogi State, which has experienced multiple escapes in recent years. The lack of attention to the prison system's infrastructure and security has led to frequent jailbreaks, endangering public safety and reinforcing the need for reform and modernization.

President Bola Tinubu recently approved the relocation of 29 correctional centres to address security and infrastructural deficiencies, but the Keffi jailbreak serves as a stark reminder that more needs to be done to.
