Thousands Attend Funeral of Late Emir in Gumel

On September 4, 2026, thousands of mourners gathered in Gumel for the funeral of the late Emir, who died on September 3 in Cairo, Egypt, after a period of illness. The funeral prayer took place at the palace of the late monarch in the afternoon.

The Emir, born in 1942, dedicated decades to serving as a traditional leader and custodian of the Gumel Emirate's culture, history, and values. The event was attended by notable figures, including Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima, who led a delegation from the Presidency, and Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi.

Governors from Kano and other northern states, along with senior politicians, government officials, and traditional rulers, also paid their respects. The ancient town of Gumel was filled with mourners as residents and visitors came to honor the deceased monarch, who is survived by approximately 33 children and numerous grandchildren.

Vice President Shettima prayed for the late Emir's eternal rest and for the strength of his family and the people of Gumel Emirate.
