Northern Nigeria Faces TikTok Access Issues, Users Turn to VPNs

TikTok users in several parts of northern Nigeria, specifically in Kaduna, Kano, and Sokoto, have reported ongoing difficulties accessing the platform since around September 14. Users have experienced issues such as problems loading videos, refreshing feeds, and uploading content.

Many have turned to virtual private networks (VPNs) to regain access, which has led to speculation that TikTok may have been deliberately restricted in these regions. However, there is currently no public confirmation from Nigerian regulators, telecommunications operators, or TikTok regarding an official block.

The cause of the disruption remains unclear, with possible explanations including technical problems, network routing issues, traffic management, or deliberate interference. The fact that some users can access TikTok through VPNs does not confirm that authorities or telecom companies are blocking the platform.

The ongoing access problems are significant for creators and small businesses in Nigeria that rely on TikTok for entertainment, content creation, and business promotion.
