NAFDAC Alerts on Local Production of Counterfeit Goods

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted the public regarding the activities of alleged Chinese counterfeit syndicates in Nigeria, which have transitioned from importing fake products to establishing local manufacturing and distribution networks. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, revealed that these counterfeiters are now producing goods locally, having previously relied on imports from China.

NAFDAC has begun closing illegal logistics facilities operated by foreign nationals linked to these counterfeit networks. The agency has reported that counterfeit products, including adulterated toothpaste, contaminated bottled water, fake cosmetics, and unwholesome dairy products, pose serious health risks to consumers.

NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that the agency confiscated and destroyed regulated products worth over N1.5 trillion during enforcement operations in Lagos and the South-East and secured 64 convictions involving counterfeiters between June 2025 and June 2026. Ongoing legal proceedings are taking place against suspects arrested in various states for the importation and distribution of fake oral-care products.
