Tinubu Accepts Egbetokun's Resignation as IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, who cited "pressing family considerations" in his resignation letter. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.

President Tinubu expressed profound appreciation for Egbetokun's distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force over the past decade. The resignation was submitted earlier on the same day, and the President highlighted the need for a steady focus on the current security challenges facing the nation.

Following Egbetokun's resignation, President Tinubu approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector General Tunji Disu to serve as the acting Inspector General of Police. This transition occurs during a critical period for the Nigeria Police Force, as the administration aims to enhance national security and strengthen institutional capacity.

Egbetokun's tenure was set to continue until October 31, 2027, despite reaching retirement age in September 2024, as noted by Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi.
