Tinubu Approves Salary Increase for 250,000 Soldiers

President Bola Tinubu has approved a substantial salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, effective September 1, 2026. The pay rises will range from 30% to 80% across different ranks, benefiting approximately 250,000 military personnel.

Officers above the rank of colonel will receive a 30% increase, while personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will see a 50% increase. Soldiers from private to staff sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80%.

This revised salary structure will elevate the annual wage bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion. The presidency stated that this salary review demonstrates the Tinubu administration's commitment to improving military personnel welfare, acknowledging their sacrifices in combating security challenges such as banditry and terrorism.

President Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting the armed forces and reaffirmed the administration's dedication to modernizing military capabilities. The salary increase represents one of the most significant improvements in military remuneration in recent years.
