FG Reaffirms Commitment to Ogoni Cleanup Project

On Thursday, during the 10th anniversary of the Ogoni Cleanup project in Bodo City, Gokana Local Government Area, Rivers State, Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal stated that President Bola Tinubu is committed to completing the Ogoni environmental restoration. Lawal emphasized that the unveiling of the Ogoni Cleanup Monument symbolizes the government's promise to the Ogoni people.

He noted that upon taking office, Tinubu issued a direct order for the project's expedited completion. Progress includes infrastructure developments such as the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Restoration and a cottage hospital, alongside significant advancements in soil and groundwater remediation, mangrove restoration, and public health interventions.

Lawal reported the return of aquatic life as evidence of ecosystem recovery and mentioned that four local government areas in Ogoniland received Ramsar accreditation for wetland conservation. He announced the commencement of phase two of the shoreline cleanup project and urged local stakeholders to engage constructively with HYPREP leadership.
