Tinubu Intensifies War on Drugs, NDLEA Seizes N1.5 Trillion

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a renewed commitment to combat drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria, announcing an intensified war against narcotics. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) reported seizing drugs valued at N1.5 trillion and arresting 29,262 suspects in the last 18 months.

Speaking at the grand final event marking the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the serious threat that drug abuse poses to families, communities, and national security. He reiterated the government's commitment to deploying innovative, evidence-based strategies to tackle the growing drug menace.

The NDLEA, led by Chairman Moham Buba Marwa, has dismantled several international drug syndicates and arrested notable figures, including 63-year-old Nigerian drug baron Innoc Anochili. The agency has also conducted nationwide sensitization programs, reaching nearly five million Nigerians, with 13,508 drug users receiving counseling and rehabilitation.
