Tinubu Acts to Prevent Gawuna's Defection in Kano APC

President Bola Tinubu has instructed top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to intervene and stop Nasir Yusuf Gawuna, the party's gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 elections in Kano State, from defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Reports indicate that Gawuna is considering aligning with the Kwankwasiyya Movement led by former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, which poses a challenge to the current Governor Abba Yusuf in the 2027 gubernatorial elections.

This potential defection has raised concerns within the APC, particularly regarding Gawuna's significant support base among youth and religious leaders. Despite efforts to reach Gawuna, who is currently abroad, the party has struggled to communicate with him.

Insiders suggest that Gawuna may be offered an automatic ticket for the Kano Central Senatorial District in the 2027 elections to encourage him to remain with the APC. Political analysts warn that Gawuna's departure could further divide the APC's traditional support.
