Tinubu Expands CNG Initiative to Include Electric Vehicles

President Bola Tinubu has approved the expansion of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to incorporate electric vehicles (EVs). This initiative, disclosed by Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga, aims to coordinate Nigeria's clean mobility strategy, which will cover both gas-driven and electric vehicles.

The initiative will continue to promote the deployment of CNG infrastructure, including mother-daughter stations and integrated refueling units for CNG vehicles. Additionally, the expansion will focus on developing and rolling out EV charging infrastructure and related investments across the country.

President Tinubu has directed the Executive Chairman of PICNG to establish a coordinated process for the rapid deployment of vehicle conversion kits nationwide, ensuring affordability for Nigerians. The initiative is part of the federal government's efforts to mitigate the impact of petrol subsidy removal and promote cleaner energy alternatives, leveraging Nigeria's significant natural gas reserves, estimated at 200 trillion cubic feet, to provide a cheaper alternative to petrol for vehicles.
