Tinubu govt pledges deeper ties with Catholic bishops on national challenges

According to Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Tinubu administration is committed to deepening its work alongside Nigeria's Catholic leadership in confronting the country's pressing issues. The government recognises faith-based organisations, especially the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Nigeria, as vital collaborators for advancing national development and ensuring social cohesion.

Akume emphasised that enduring cooperation involving religious communities, traditional institutions, groups within civil society, and business actors provides the bedrock necessary for resolving Nigeria's difficulties. He noted that the federal government intends to broaden its engagement with these partners across numerous domains of policy that bear on the nation.

This collaborative model underpins how the administration seeks to move forward with its reform initiatives through inclusive partnership. Regarding economic conditions, officials characterised the hardship currently affecting Nigerians as transitory, linking it to structural reforms under way.

They maintained that prosperity stemming from these adjustments should emerge relatively soon, though no concrete schedules were detailed in available remarks. In separate remarks, Akume also countered assertions suggesting the administration aims to create a one-party political system.

He reasserted the government's dedication to preserving the independent functioning of Nigeria's election authority in advance of 2027 polling, emphasising that it upholds the constitution, judicial independence, and competition among parties. Political organisations and those seeking office will continue enjoying their rights under law, he affirmed.
