Tinubu Urged to Amend Constitution for Local Government Autonomy

The Citizen Centre for Integrated Development, through its Executive Director Emeka Ononamadu, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to amend the 1999 Nigerian Constitution to align with current realities, particularly concerning local government administration. This appeal was made during a workshop aimed at training enumerators and monitoring capital projects in Enugu State.

Ononamadu highlighted that amending the constitution could secure Tinubu's legacy as a transformative leader in Nigeria's history. He pointed out that the current constitutional provisions, particularly Section 162, which allows for a joint account between state and local governments, contribute to corruption and hinder local governance.

Ononamadu argued that granting full autonomy to local governments would empower them and improve service delivery, thereby addressing the significant issues of corruption and inefficiency that plague local administrations. He emphasized the importance of local government autonomy for the overall progress of the nation.
