Tinubu Approves Constituency Projects for Lawmakers

President Bola Tinubu has approved a phased implementation plan for outstanding constituency projects for members of the National Assembly, a move aimed at addressing growing dissatisfaction among lawmakers ahead of the 2027 general election. This decision follows complaints from senators and House of Representatives members regarding the non-implementation of their Zonal Intervention Projects (ZIPs) included in the 2024, 2025, and 2025 Supplementary Appropriation Acts.

Lawmakers have been asked to identify their preferred constituency projects for funding due to delays in contractor payments linked to the slow implementation of the 2025 budget. A senior legislative source indicated that the House Committee on Appropriations had communicated approval for the phased clearance of verified obligations, allowing members to nominate payment certificates worth N500 million monthly.

Senators are reportedly allocated N1 billion each for projects over three months starting July. Concerns have been raised about the prioritization of politically attractive projects over essential areas like healthcare and infrastructure.
