Tinubu Opens Abuja Court of Appeal Complex, Demands Swift Justice

President Bola Tinubu on Monday commissioned the newly completed Court of Appeal complex in the Dakibiu area of Abuja's Federal Capital Territory. The facility replaces cramped temporary offices that have long constrained judicial operations in the appellate division.

Vice President Kashim Shettima joined the president at the inauguration ceremony. The new complex includes two large courtrooms, eight smaller hearing chambers, a law library, office space for ten judges, three conference halls, and administrative facilities.

The infrastructure expansion aims to reduce court congestion and enable faster case processing. Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike delivered the project, which was completed in May 2024, within the contracted 16-month timeline.

Tinubu used the occasion to address the judiciary directly, urging judges to ensure rulings are delivered with speed and fairness regardless of litigants' social status, ethnic background, or financial position. He identified prolonged case backlogs and delayed adjudication as sources of public frustration that undermine confidence in the courts and threaten democratic stability.

The president described the common person's perception of the judiciary as 'the last hope' for justice. Tinubu aligned the project with his administration's 'Renewed Hope' agenda, framing infrastructure improvements as essential to restoring the dignity of democratic institutions.

He commended Wike's execution, noting the project's timely completion without variations or excuses. The inauguration of the Abuja Court of Appeal division represents one of several judicial infrastructure upgrades the administration has prioritized, though a completion target for additional work was cited as July 2024.
