Tinubu Hosts Chad President Déby at Aso Rock Meeting

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu welcomed the President of Chad, Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby, at Aso Rock in Abuja at 2 PM. This visit marks Déby's first official trip to Nigeria since he assumed leadership on May 23, 2024, following the death of his father, Idriss Déby, who was killed by rebels on April 20, 2021.

During the meeting, details of the discussions were not immediately available, but sources indicated that the focus was on regional security, particularly efforts to combat terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin, which includes Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. This meeting comes shortly after Tinubu hosted St.

Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Terrance Drew, making Déby the second head of state to visit Nigeria within a week. Tinubu is set to attend Déby’s inauguration in May 2024.

The meeting occurs at a time when Chad is repositioning itself within the regional security architecture following its withdrawal from military agreements in November 2024.
