Tinubu Meets Outgoing ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Touray

On Thursday, President Bola Tinubu received Dr. Omar Touray, the outgoing President of the ECOWAS Commission, at the State House in Abuja.

Accompanying Touray was Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Although the specifics of their closed-door meeting were not disclosed, it took place weeks before Touray's formal handover of leadership of the ECOWAS Commission.

Dr. Omar Touray, a Gambian diplomat, began his term on July 3, 2022, after being unanimously nominated by the Government of The Gambia and endorsed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for the 2022–2026 term.

He succeeded Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, who led the Commission from 2018. Prior to his role at ECOWAS, Touray served as The Gambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs under former President Yahya Jammeh until his dismissal in September 2009.

He also worked with the Islamic Development Bank before returning to diplomatic service.
