Tinubu Promises Refineries Will Resume Operations Soon

On Thursday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu met with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), led by National Executive President Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Tinubu assured that Nigeria's refineries would return to operation, stating that his administration is restructuring the economic framework surrounding these facilities to ensure they are commercially viable.

He emphasized that mere activity at the refineries would not suffice unless they generate meaningful economic value. The President acknowledged the challenges inherited from previous administrations and expressed his commitment to resolving these issues.

He linked the administration's petroleum sector reforms to the removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, which faced opposition from labor groups. Tinubu stated that the funds saved from the subsidy would be redirected to benefit the economy, including meeting salary obligations and financing infrastructure projects like major highways.

He promised to soon disclose how the savings are being utilized.
