Tinubu's Bold Plan to Revitalize Nigeria's Refineries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that Nigeria’s refineries must not only restart operations but also become profitable, marking a significant shift in the government's approach to the downstream petroleum sector. Meeting with the national leadership of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu stated that the federal government is undertaking a comprehensive reset, restructuring, and technical assessment of the refineries to tackle the persistent structural, operational, financial, and managerial challenges.

Historically, Nigeria has struggled with its refineries, often committing billions to rehabilitation without achieving sustained productivity. Tinubu emphasized that a refinery's success is measured by its ability to process crude efficiently and generate value for Nigerians.

His administration has already removed the petrol subsidy, a move NUPENG President Salimon Akanni Oladiti described as courageous, which is expected to lead to a more efficient energy economy. The focus on domestic refining is crucial for strengthening energy security and reducing import dependence.
