Tinubu Proposes Major Reforms for Nigeria's Education System

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has introduced an executive bill to the Senate on Thursday, seeking to reform the senior secondary school system in Nigeria. The bill, which was forwarded to the Senate by Godswill Akpabio, aims to strengthen the administration of public secondary education.

The Federal Executive Council approved the amendment bill, which is set to be finalized by April 30, 2026. The proposed reforms come amid public debate regarding the federal government's plan to abolish the separation between junior secondary schools (JSS) and senior secondary schools (SSS).

Education Minister Tunji Alausa announced this proposal in Abuja, arguing that the current structure contributes to a loss of 20 million pupils at the primary and secondary school levels. The reforms intend to reduce dropout rates and simplify educational progress, ensuring that every child receives a continuous 12-year education, thus advancing towards higher education and vocational training.
