Tinubu Proposes Repeal of Criminal Justice Act 2015

President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Nigerian Senate to repeal the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015 and to enact a new Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2026. This request was communicated in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate and read during a plenary session on Thursday.

The proposed bill aims to establish an Administration of Criminal Justice Court in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and across federal courts in Nigeria. It seeks to promote efficient management of criminal justice institutions and ensure speedy dispensation of justice while protecting the rights and interests of victims and law enforcement agencies.

Tinubu's bill identifies challenges within the current system, including delays in criminal investigations and prosecutions, inadequate technology deployment, and ineffective case management mechanisms. The bill proposes the establishment of an Administration of Criminal Justice Monitor Council to enhance compliance and effectiveness.

Senate President Akpabio has referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further legislative input, with a report expected within four weeks.
