Tinubu Proposes State Police Bill for Constitutional Backing

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent a State Police Bill to the House of Representatives, requesting constitutional backing for the establishment of state police structures in Nigeria. The bill aims to provide a legal framework that would allow states to create and manage their own police services, marking a significant step toward reforming Nigeria's security system.

In a letter to Tajudeen Abba, the Speaker of the House, Tinubu urged lawmakers to consider the constitutional amendment necessary for the bill's passage. This initiative is part of a broader plan to restructure the nation's security architecture in response to ongoing threats such as kidnapping, banditry, and terrorism.

The President expressed confidence that the National Assembly would support this measure, which seeks to empower states to manage their own police forces while the Nigeria Police Force continues to operate at the federal level. For the amendment to become law, it must be approved by at least two-thirds of the state houses of assembly.
