Tinubu Inaugurates Committee for State Police Implementation

On Tuesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated a workgroup aimed at implementing the state police framework, a move following the National Assembly's passage of the constitutional amendment for state police in 2026. The committee, chaired by Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, is tasked with preparing the legal framework necessary for the operationalization of state police across Nigeria.

The proposed dual police structure will consist of the federal police service and 36 state police services. The constitutional amendment creates a framework for state police, while the National Police Bill will provide the legal structure for its implementation.

The bill will also address issues necessary for the smooth operation of the state police system, including minimum police standards and human rights safeguards. Other members of the committee include the Attorney General of the Federation, the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum, and the Inspector General of Police.
