Tinubu to Address Nigerians on Democracy Day June 12

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to deliver a national address on Democracy Day, which falls on June 12, 2023. This date commemorates the 33rd anniversary of the annulled presidential election of 1993, in which late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola was declared the winner.

The annulment by military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida sparked a prolonged pro-democracy struggle that has significantly influenced Nigeria's political landscape. The announcement was made by Tinubu's special adviser, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday.

The speech is set to air at 7:00 PM on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) network. The observance of Democracy Day was formalized by former President Muhammadu Buhari in June 2018, designating it as a public holiday to replace May 29, which marks the return to civilian rule in 1999.
