Tinubu to Address UN General Assembly on September 23

President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to address the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. He will deliver Nigeria's national statement during the morning session, expected between 11:30 a.m. and noon New York time, which corresponds to 4:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Nigerian time. The General Debate runs from September 22 to 28, 2026, with over 150 heads of state and government participating.

The theme for this session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” Tinubu's participation will allow Nigeria to present its position on significant international issues, including economic development and regional security. Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, confirmed Tinubu's attendance, emphasizing the importance of discussing regional border-policing initiatives to address security challenges in West Africa.

Tinubu will also engage in various meetings and side events, including discussions on climate action and pandemic preparedness, and is expected to meet with outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres and UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.
