Tinubu to Lead African Minerals Summit in New York

President Tinubu is set to chair the African Minerals Development Summit on September 21, 2026, in New York, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly. The summit, organized by the Africa Minerals Strategy Group (AMSG), will gather African leaders, ministers, investors, development finance institutions, and global industry players.

The theme will focus on attracting investment, enhancing continental cooperation, and developing competitive mineral value chains. AMSG emphasizes the need for Africa to invest in local processing and value addition to transform its mineral wealth into economic opportunities.

The continent possesses significant reserves of critical minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt, graphite, manganese, and rare earth elements, yet much of this is exported with minimal local processing. The summit will also introduce the Continental Integration and Economic Assurance Declaration (CIEAD), aimed at improving cooperation on mineral value addition and investment mobilization.

AMSG stresses the importance of capitalizing on the global demand for critical minerals to foster manufacturing, technology transfer, and sustainable economic growth.
