Tinubu Advocates for African Representation at UN Security Council

During the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, urged for significant reforms in the United Nations, particularly the Security Council. He argued that Africa should be granted at least two permanent seats with full rights, responsibilities, and veto power, alongside five non-permanent seats.

Tinubu emphasized that the current global power distribution, established in 1945, is outdated and that Africa can no longer be sidelined in discussions that affect its future. He echoed sentiments shared by Kenyan President William Ruto, who also called for permanent African representation on the Security Council.

Tinubu condemned ongoing global conflicts and nationalism, urging world leaders to adhere to the foundational principles of the UN Charter and to restore trust in international institutions. He highlighted the UN's role in preventing war and promoting dialogue and collective responsibility among nations.
