Survivors Share Ordeal of Jigawa Canoe Accident

Survivors of a canoe accident in Malamawar Yandutse, Ringim Local Government Area, Jigawa State, shared their traumatic experiences after their overloaded boat capsized in the river. The incident, which occurred while they were returning from rice fields, resulted in at least 10 deaths and 23 rescues.

Survivors, including 17-year-old Anti Haruna, expressed their belief that they would not survive, highlighting the bravery of local fishermen and farmers who rushed to help. Haruna lost consciousness but was saved by community members.

Another survivor, Fatsima, described how her hijab trapped her underwater, leading to her passing out and waking up in the hospital. Sawaida recounted feeling herself sinking before blacking out.

Survivors attributed the tragedy to the canoe's poor condition and its overcapacity. They urged the Jigawa State and Federal Governments to construct a bridge across the river to prevent future accidents, especially during the rainy season.
