41 Dead in Sokoto Boat Accident Amid Safety Concerns

Last weekend, a tragic boat accident occurred in Gorau community on the Goronyo River in Goronyo Local Government Area, Sokoto State, resulting in the deaths of at least 41 individuals, with 11 others rescued. The National Inland Waterways (NIWA) Area Manager in Sokoto, Mr Abdulkadir Yusuf, reported that the boat was carrying approximately 82 passengers at the time of the incident, which included a community leader traveling to a rice farm for harvest.

Yusuf attributed the accident to negligence, overloading, and violations of safety regulations. He noted that many boats often exceed their passenger limits, leading to dangerous conditions, especially during storms.

The lack of proper maintenance and safety standards for water transportation in Nigeria has been a persistent issue, with NIWA, established in 1997, failing to enforce regulatory oversight effectively. The agency's mandate includes managing Nigeria's navigable waterways and ensuring safe transportation, but it has been criticized for merely counting casualties after such tragedies.
