U.S. Citizens Must Travel with Valid Passports

The United States government has issued a reminder to its citizens to ensure they carry valid U.S. passports when traveling to and from the United States. This requirement applies to all U.S. citizens, including children and those with dual citizenship.

In a post on X on Sunday, the United States Mission in Nigeria emphasized that U.S. citizens must enter and depart the United States using a U.S. passport. The mission specifically noted that dual national U.S. citizens are prohibited from using their foreign passports to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).

Mission advised Americans living abroad to ensure their travel documents are current before planning trips to the United States, urging them to renew expired or soon-to-expire passports, as many countries require passports to have at least six months of validity.
